MOUNTAINS
Volcanic Mountains form as a result of volcanic eruptions. When a volcano
erupts the materials that are ejected fall around a hole or crater and build up
a mountain that is roughly conical in shape and has a crater at the top.
The
mountain whose summit is farthest from the earth's center is the Andean peak of
Chimborazo (20,561 ft). 98 miles south of the equator in Ecuador. Its
summit is 7,057 ft further from the earth's center than the summit of Mt.
Everest. The highest mountain on the equator is Volcan Cayambe (19,285
ft). Ecuador at Longitude 77 degree 58' W. A mountaineer a top the summit
would be moving at 1,038 mph relative to the earth's center due to the earth's
rotation.
