- Under Construction at; 1) Madras

Private Sector Oil Refineries taken over by the Government:
ESSO at Trombay (Bombay). It was taken over by the Hindustan Petroleum
Corporation Limited, a public sector concern. Burmah Sheli Refinery at
Bombay. (It is now known as Bharat Refineries Limited). Caltex
Refinery at Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Assam Oil Company at Digboi
(Assam).
Ship-building Yards:
- India has three ship building yards in the
Public Sector: 1) The Hindustan
Shipyards at Vishakhapatnam. 2) Garden Reach Workshop at
Calcutta, and 3) Mabgoan Dock at Bombay. A fourth shipyard at Cochin
(also in Public Sector) is under construction.

- Steel Plants:
- Four gigantic Steel Plants have been set up
in Public Sector. 1)
Rourkela (Orissa): with the help of German
experts. 2) Bhilai (Madhya Pradesh): with the help
of Russian experts. 3) Durgapur (West Bengal): with the
help of British experts. 4) Bokaro (Bihar) with Russian help.

- New Steel Plants:
- Government of India has decided to establish
three new steel plant at 1) Visakhapatnam, 2) Salem in
Tamil Nadu and 3) Hospet in Karnataka. While the plants at
Vishakapatnam and Hospet will produce mild steel, the Salem plant will be
designed to produce special steel.

Third Giant
India is not doing so bad, after all, on the industrial scene.
In a list prepared "SOUTH" the Third World magazine, of the
600 largest companies in the Third World India has the third position
with 81 companies. South Korea and Brazil with 93 and 83
companies respectively come first and second. China has 11
companies, Pakistan 9 and Bangladesh 2.
The number of countries represented in the list is 48. The top
ten countries and the number of companies in them are as under:
