Earth Data
- Which is the planet having all circumstances for the existence of
life? The Earth. (third among the
planets of the solar system)
- Who first assessed the mass of the
Earth? Dr. Nevil Mas Kelyne
(Scotland) in 1764.
- In to how many layers is the outer surface of the Earth divided? And
what are they? In to Four.
(1) Lithosphere (2) Hydrosphere (3)
Atmosphere (4) Biosphere.
- What is Lithosphere? Lithosphere
means the entire top crust of the Earth which includes not only the land
surface but also the ocean floor.
- What is Hydrosphere? Hydrosphere
is the water surface which includes the oceans, lakes and rivers. It
rests on the lithosphere.
- What is Atmosphere? Atmosphere
is the blanket of air that envelops the Earth. It covers both the land
surface and the water surface.
- What is Biosphere? Biosphere is
the sphere of life which spreads over all the three other
spheres-lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
- What is the shape of the Earth?
Earth is not a true sphere, but flattened at the poles and hence an oblate.
- What are climatic regions? Which are
they? The surface of the Earth is
divided into different zones based on the amount of sunlight received
throughout the year which are called climatic regions. They are
(1) Torrid zone (2) Temperature zone (3) Frigid zone.
- Into how many layers is the atmosphere divided on the basis of the
distance from the surface of the Earth? They are divided into six
layers.
| 1. |
Troposphere |
distance 0-11 km |
| 2. |
Stratosphere |
distance 11-48 km |
| 3. |
Mesosphere |
distance 48-80 km |
| 4. |
Thermosphere |
distance 80-600 km |
| 5. |
Exosphere |
distance Above 600km |
| 6. |
Ionosphere |
distance up to 1500 km |
- Which layer of the atmosphere is in constant contact with the Earth's
surface? Troposphere.
- Which is the layer just above the
Troposphere? Stratosphere.
- What is the age of the Earth?
About 4600 million years.
- What is the thickness of the
atmosphere? Up to a height of 960
km from the earth.
- The layer of the atmosphere which prevents the flow of the fatal ultra
violet radiation from reaching the
Earth. Ionosphere
- The magnetic layer above the
Ionosphere: Magnetosphere.
- The highest place on the Earth:
Everest.
- The circles which vertically cross the
equator: Longitudes.
- Total weight of the air in the atmosphere 6*10 (power)15 Tons

- Different kings of rocks found on the
Earth: Igneous rocks, Sedimentary
rocks, Metamorphic rocks.
- The metals which form the core of
Earth: Iron and Nickel.
- The innermost part of the Earth:
Molten core
- What is the pressure of the Earth's atmosphere at sea
level? The pressure varies with
temperature. It is calculated to be 1.04561 kg per sq. cm.
(approximate).
- What is the force of gravity of the
Earth? The force which attracts
the bodies towards the centre of the Earth.
- What is geothermal energy? The
geothermal energy is the natural thermal energy of the interior core of the
Earth.
- Where is the lowest point of Earth's land
Surface? The lowest point of Earth
is the shores of Dead Sea which is below 1300ft (aproximate).
